Refinish Baseboards in Two Easy Steps

How to refinish baseboards in two easy steps to get them looking brand new!

Step 1: Clean and Fill

The first thing you will want to do is clean the baseboards. I like using a wet sponge with a bit of Dawn soap and give them a quick scrub and then wipe clean. Allow them to dry before proceeding.

Use wood filler (white) to fill any cracks or chips missing from the baseboard. I love this one that comes in an easy-to-use squeeze bottle. I find it easiest to use my finger to get in all of the small nooks and a paint scraper for the larger repairs. It’s really whatever you prefer. If there is a gap forming between the baseboard and the wall, you can use the filler for that too!

Once the filler dries, use a sanding block to smooth the surfaces. Keep sanding until it feels completely even with the baseboard surface.

Depending on the size of the repairs, you may need to repeat this process multiple times. Keep going until you achieve a completely smooth surface.

Once you are finished sanding, wipe off the dust with a dry rag.

Step 2: Paint

After repairs are made, you are ready to paint!

First, use painters’ tape to tape off the wall and the floor surrounding the baseboards.

Use a paint brush to paint along the top of the baseboards and across the front. I like to first apply with a brush and then go back over the front of the baseboards with a foam roller to ensure a smooth finish without any brush strokes.

For my baseboards I used Behr Ultra Pure White. This is a perfect color if you are looking for a bright, crisp white. It goes with any paint color and is an affordable option found already mixed and ready to purchase in the paint aisle at Home Depot!

You may have to apply two coats of paint to achieve the perfect finish. Especially if your baseboards were in horrible shape like mine were!

Vents

If any vents are obstructing the baseboards, remove them first. I painted mine the same color as the baseboards for an even look.

I used the foam roller to paint the outside and middle edges and then a paint brush to paint each vent line. This can be done quickly and doesn’t have to be perfect, but it definitely helps make it look nice and new.

And that’s it!
